Philip Patterson – Persona

PersonaPhilip Patterson is a multi-talented composer, arranger, and keyboardist from Chicago, IL. Philip displayed talent at an early age and credits his high school band teacher with helping him develop an ear for music. His father, Carlos Patterson Sr., a respected organist, also had influence on the musical flare that Phil possesses.  At a very early age, Phil began his very first musical training on the drum set at his grandfather’s church.

Even though Philip Patterson is now categorized as jazz, his music has enough “pizzazz” and variety to keep you fully engaged. Growing up, Phil listened to a variety of music inclusive of Gospel, jazz, R&B/pop/funk bands like Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson, Chick Corea, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, Kirk Franklin, The Thompson Community Singers, The Clark Sisters, and many more.

Although Phil started on drums, he knew that playing organ/piano was what he really wanted to do. Philip began composing/arranging music for numerous local stage plays at the age of 20 while also playing for various churches and Gospel artist throughout the city of Chicago.

After much training/experience Phil became the musical director for such acclaimed broad way shows such as “The Color Purple” and “Dream Girls.” His dedication to his craft earned him best musical director for the Color Purple by the Black Theater Alliance and a nomination for best musical director for Dream Girls.

While a student at Roosevelt, Phil continued to play in church as well as jazz/gospel gigs around the city of Chicago. Yet, he still had a vision of recording some of his compilations of various songs he had written over the years.

Phil’s debut album is “Philosophy Vol. 1”. While we know that Philosophy deals with the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, this piece of music reflects Phil’s various states of mind having to do with a form of feeling about something. Phil is excited about his musical journey and invites you into his experience.

His newest album is Persona (2021) available on all digital outlets.
