Marcus Anderson – This Is Christmas

The gift of sound is fit for every season when Marcus Anderson comes to play. The saxophonist stands out with This Is Christmas, turning the traditional holiday cheer into something listeners can play throughout the year.    Breaking boundaries of soul and jazz, the tone is set and the vibe is just what one expects from a seasonal release with the reminders of home and family latticed throughout the compilation. Renditions of yuletide favorites such as Oh Christmas Tree, This Christmas and Oh Come All Ye Faithful welcome listeners with cheer and instrumental grace, enhanced by Anderson s natural musical trope.

Every facet of his talented ensemble is enlisted to heighten the experience of the songs we’ve all come to love and enjoy.   What is not expected is the sensuality which Anderson channels to break traditional expectations of jazz-themed Christmas music to deliver an album that can turn any day into a holiday. Play Christmas with Her and Favorite Time of the Year for a romantic evening with someone special- the melodies are perfect for cuddling, whether it be rain, sun or snow. Jingle Jam is another surprise, as Anderson embraces the more funky aspects of his musical background so that you can bring this track to the cookout!   Plug in the tree and light the candelabra because it is officially ignited with This Is Christmas! Clever and exceptionally -mastered, this album brings out the best of every occasion from winter to summer, spring and fall. Charging the senses while keeping you in the mood to celebrate, groove with Marcus Anderson and share the spice of the holiday season any time of year!

Dave Koz and Friends – 20th Anniversary Christmas

After twenty years of sold out Christmas tours and five celebrated holiday albums within as many years, saxophonist Dave Koz has done his share – and then some – to help to make the season bright. This year he has reassembled his original holiday lineup – pianist David Benoit, trumpeter Rick Braun and acoustic guitarist Peter White – for the making of Dave Koz and Friends 20th Anniversary Christmas, an album that features brand new recordings of classic Christmas songs.

The September 29, 2017, release of Dave Koz and Friends 20th Anniversary Christmas on Concord Records sets the stage for Koz and this same lineup to go back on the road in late November for the 2017 holiday season.

“If you had asked me twenty years ago, I would never in a million years believed that we’d be doing Christmas tours two decades later,” says Koz. “But here we are, still doing it, and it’s going as strong as ever! So with twenty years under our belts, it seemed like a great reason to celebrate, and that’s why we decided to include the original cast of our Christmas tour. It’s our chance to go back to the very beginning and celebrate the relationships that this whole journey was built on.” Continue reading

Scott Wilkie – Joy

joy-coverFresh off the success of his most recent album All In, keyboardist/composer Scott Wilkie found the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season in 2014: gathering a group of his favorite musicians and bringing the SRO house down at southern California’s contemporary jazz hotspot Spaghettini Grille with fresh, soulful, funky and spiritual arrangements of cherished Christmas songs. The overwhelming success of that magical evening inspired Wilkie and his ensemble to gather over several days in June, to create a full length album whose title says it all: Joy.

A dynamic, freewheeling contemporary jazz recording, Joy is a live-in-the-studio treasure featuring exciting and heartfelt arrangements that capture the many emotions of the season. They run the groovin’ gamut from old school soul-jazz to pop, soul, funk – and even a beautiful chamber music vibe. The collection offers a spirited mix of beloved Christmas carols we can all sing by heart (We Three Kings, Hark The Herald Angels Sing, What Child Is This, O Tannenbaum, Silent Night, Away in a Manger); secular seasonal classics (The Christmas Song, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, My Favorite Things); and sweet, enduring favorites from Kenny Loggins (Celebrate Me Home) and Vince Guaraldi’s “A Charlie Brown Christmas” (Christmastime Is Here, Christmas Is Coming).

Joy features the core ensemble of Peter Sprague (Chick Corea, Sergio Mendes), who also played on two tracks of All In; bassist Nathan Brown; drummer Jeff Olson; Greg Holmes on organ and other keyboards; and percussionist Ramon Yslas (David Sanborn). They created many of the arrangements on the spot in the studio, with a dynamic synergy that could only happen by recording face-to-face. Also on hand to provide extra texture and colors are legendary R&B/jazz guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. (a mainstay on previous Wilkie recordings) and cellist Erdis Maxhelaku, who brings classical grace and elegance to Hark The Herald Angels Sing, What Child Is This and Away in a Manger.

Celebrate the glory of Christmas – and bring home a CD full of musical Joy that will become a special part of your holiday traditions for years to come. More on
