Vahagn Stepanyan – A New Chapter

341895068_708615194279054_1290729248019510386_nWhen a ten-year-old boy in war-torn Armenia confidently told his piano teacher that he would one day play with jazz and gospel celebrities, she instantly shot down his ambitions.

But the boy remained steadfast and undeterred and responded defiantly with the words: “Mark this day on your calendar because one day it will happen for me.” In the intervening years between those early piano lessons and the recording of this album, Vahagn was classically trained in composition, and learned the art of production.

He started selling songs to Armenian artists and playing in jazz clubs in his native country, but learned hard-earned business music lessons by being paid only four dollars if paid at all. Vahagn was given a saxophone which he promptly sold to buy a computer so that he could learn how to arrange songs. During a visit to the USA in 2009, he was encouraged by the response to his masterful keyboard skills. Four years later, difficult circumstances meant that he didn’t even have a keyboard to practice on. Still, he persevered. Flash forward to the present, a year and a half after moving his family to Los Angeles to realize his dream, keyboardist Vahagn Stepanyan surrounded himself with world-class Grammy-winning musicians, producers and engineers to record his sophomore album, featuring the aptly titled ‘A New Chapter’.

The Park Avenue Experience – Time And Time Again

timeandtimeagainSyracuse, Italy based multi-instrumentalist Fabio Puglisi, known by the project Soul Basement with singer Jay Nemor, had developed the project The Park Avenue Experience. The debut album of this project was Life Span, released in 2020. Next album was Structures (2022). Now Fabio presents Time And Time Again (2023).

Fabio is well aware of the importance of the first track of an album. Whether the listener’s attention is caught. The appropriately named opener At First Glance does full justice to this task.

Just As You Are has a romantic attitude that is perfectly staged by the piano and the accompanying guitar. The jazzy meticulousness with which Fabio approaches the subject attracts particular admiration.

Marcus Click – Brand New Day

345924101_982593516108792_2669216023873539312_nAs a native of Louisville, Kentucky, Marcus Click grew up with aspirations of becoming a pro football player, but his goals changed after having committed over 13 years of his young life to the U.S. Navy honorably. During this time, his love for jazz grew by listening and learning from the late Grover Washington, Jr., David Sanborn and Kirk Whalum, to name a few. Marcus says on one account,” I became truly inspired by a phone call from the late saxophonist, George Howard, a conversation I’ll never forget.” Surprisingly, Marcus would find himself with Rebbie Jackson (sister of Jacksons; Janet Jackson) during her show in Las Vegas. He knew his life was being routed towards a musical journey.

Marcus has released his new self-titled CD “Brand New Day”, on May 12, 2023. Some notable Artists, Musicians and Producers include: Mel Holder (multi-talented Grammy, Stellar, and Dove Award-nominated artist, composer, arranger, saxophonist, author and pastor), Roger Ryan (Multi-Grammy nominated & award winner, GMA Dove nominated, Juno Award-winning Producer, musician, composer & songwriter), William Green (musician, composer, songwriter and producer), Ben Parris (Grammy “Emerging Artist” Award-winner, multi-instrumentalist & producer), Madoca Kawahara (national recording artist, keyboardist & composer), Jonathan Fritzen (contemporary jazz pianist, multi-instrumentalist & producer), Bob Baldwin (contemporary jazz pianist, music composer, author, inventor, radio host and creator of the NewUrbanJazz.com Lounge, and music producer) and  Alissia Benveniste  (A self-proclaimed funk revivalist, Bassist, multi-instrumentalist & producer)

A little about “Brand New Day”: This compilation of music is about a brief summary of Marcus’ life journey, based on the song titles, which carry a message. Marcus’ journey as a young adult came from a single-parent home, but he would blossom into a renewed, inspired man, father and musician, which can be noticed and heard through his music.  Marcus really put his heart and soul into this album. This album should be celebrated by many because every day is truly a “Brand New Day”.

George Anderson – Story So Far – Best Of –

StorysofarCelebrated British bassist George Anderson leads an unusual dual musical life. He is, of course, best known for his work with smooth jazz icons Shakatak. He’s a key member of the band – on the road and in the studio. George was also instrumental in co-writing many of Shakatak’s best tunes ….most famously ‘Day by Day’ featuring Grammy award winner Al Jarreau. George was responsible too for co-writing the song ‘Perfect Smile’ which was a smooth-jazz radio play hit in the US for Shakatak in the 90’s.

George, though, also fronts his own band and under his own name he’s released the solo albums Positivity (2009), Expressions (2012), From Cape Town To London (2015), Body and Soul (2017), and Songs From Tomorrow (2021).

Story So Far (2023) is a compilation from Shakatak bassist taken from his 4 solo albums Positivity, Expressions, Body and Soul and Songs From Tomorrow. Order this album here.

Dan Wilson – Things Eternal

danwilson-thingseternalThe new album by American guitarist Dan Wilson will be released in 2 days. Like many a jazz musician before him, Wilson honed his skills in church.

“This wasn’t your average gospel church where cats are just chicken-picking,” he explains. “The music in the church that I grew up in is entirely driven by guitar. I can name thirty great guitarists offhand, generations of players dating back to the forties and fifties. I had never heard of Grant Green or Wes Montgomery or George Benson, but their indirect influence was coming to me through the guys I listened to in church.”

Although playing was frowned upon in the secular jazz world, Wilson had little choice when a jazz-loving uncle broadened his musical horizons. “He played me The Dynamic Duo by Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery,” he recalls. “I heard them play ‘Down by the Riverside’ and from that moment I knew this was what I wanted to do for a living.”
