Alex Parchment – Drifting

DriftingAlex Parchment performs as a solo artist while also leading the Alex Parchment Quintet, a traditional jazz ensemble and AP.Chemistry, a musical experiment fusing soul, funk, hip hop, R&B and jazz to form a unique but energetic sound. In April, 2020, Alex released his debut album entitled Burnin’ Up, which yielded two placements on the Smooth Jazz Billboard’s Top 30 Chart (“Vibin’ In Time” rising to #1, and “It’s Real” rising to #11 respectively).

His new album is Drifting (2023) and can be streamed on all major platforms.

Craig Sharmat & Neil Andersson – A New Set Of Strings

A+New+Set+of+StringsThe follow up to the critically acclaimed Craig Sharmat and Neal Andersson album, “Strings”, Aptly titled “A New Set Of Strings.” Several songs from ‘Strings’ continues to get played on the SiriusXM ESCAPE channel for well over two years now. So Craig and Neil thought why not do a follow up and make it better! How you ask? They hired a world class orchestra for this project! There are very few projects that feature Gypsy Jazz guitars and full orchestra let alone playing traditional American Songbook tunes. “A New Set Of Strings” is a truly unique project!

This is not your normal Gypsy Jazz guitar album. It is mostly lush strings with Gypsy Jazz playing. It uses a combination of mocked up strings and real string overlays with of course Gypsy Jazz guitar playing featured.

Chris Godber –  Meant 2 Be

373557697_331036879272597_7690806880116301288_nHailing from Panama City, Florida saxophonist Chris Godber has already four solo albums to his discography. His latest masterpiece [coming Nov 3rd] the Gospel Jazz EP titled, “Meant to Be,” stands as a true testament to Chris’s faith and musical journey. Chris says, “Music is such a powerful force that brings people together and I think we need more of that. Despite doctors telling me I couldn’t do it, God gave me the ability to play even with my asthma, so all Glory goes to Him. I tell my story everywhere that I play because I want it to resonate with people just as much as my music. You never know who’s out there listening and who needs to hear something inspiring; that message of God’s grace, hope and healing. That’s why I do what I do.”

Incognito – Into You

a2743987056_16-1The formation Incognito initiated by Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick is an ever-changing conglomerate of highly talented musicians who have been instrumental in shaping the content of the term acid jazz.

This website has tried to approach the phenomenon of his personality through record reviews, interview, essays and concert reports. I myself had only the opportunity for a short conversation with Bluey on the occasion of a concert in Cologne, but have been one of his admirers for many years.

So it’s a pleasure to welcome Into You, a new album released this month on the Shanachie Entertainment label. The massive scale of such a project can easily be seen in the credits. The comprehensive album kicks off with Keep Me in the Dark and features vocalist Natalie Duncan. Natalie Alexis Duncan is a British soul musician from Nottingham, England. The piece is characterized by a brilliant horn section and a virtuoso piano solo by Chicco Allotta.

Ian Williams – Slow-Motion Apocalypse

slow-motionapocalypseThe new album by London-based composer & musician Ian Williams won’t be released until November 3, but here’s my review already.

It’s an abrupt turn away from the minimalism of his previous release ‘All Becomes Desert’ from 2021. This time it’s all about “impact,” the epic devastation of a civilization determined to cut off its own life support systems. It’s also a furious lament about the headlong rush to deplete the planet’s precious resources to enrich a handful of non-visionaries whose main concern seems to be getting to Mars or buying football players…because that will certainly help.

Ian Williams began his music career in Edinburgh in the mid-1980s as founder of Beautiful Pea Green Boat, whose ethereal, atmospheric sound predated the fashion for dream pop by at least two decades. Various collaborations with the Lebanese choreographer Joumana Mourad and her contemporary dance company Ijad ensured that he fused Arabic/classical/techno/ambient styles. He then changed course and collaborated with singer Claudia Barton as Gamine, releasing two albums of dark, piano-led torch songs and lullabies.

Gary Smith – Moondance

8eda0c25ed243f4683dd242dc7447d89Gary Smith is a heavyweight improviser and guitar pioneer. Played in the Bill Fay Group and made a great debut duo album with John Stevens on the Ecstatic Peace label in 1993. He has worked and recorded with Hugh Hopper & Drummer Shoji Hano, Masayoshi Urabe, Chie Mukai, Mass, Rhys Chatham, Bernhard Gunter & more. He now uses just an amp and volume pedal, no effects whatsover and through extended techniques produces music closer to computer generated sound, prepared guitar, bird song etc. He now spends his time between Italy & London.

He has released on the label GRS West Music numerous albums. An interesting one is Moondance (2021).

This album is available on all digital platforms.
