And-Now-ThisOver 25 years into a stellar, multi-faceted career that’s found him continually pushing the sonic boundaries of what’s possible in contemporary urban jazz, saxophonist Paul Taylor brings us his highly-anticipated new recording AND NOW THIS on Peak Records.

AND NOW THIS, fully created via the exchange of digital files between the Las Vegas based Taylor and his longtime musical compadre, collaborator, co-writer and producer Dino Esposito, features the saxman’s ongoing exploration of an expansive range of dynamic danceable grooves and intricate pop/electronica vibes. The ten tracks fully reflect the way Taylor began moving forward in his personal and creative life, as if to say, in his words, “we’re coming out of the pandemic, this is what I’ve been creating, we’re kicking it back into high gear and we are more open-minded in our approach to music than ever.”

From the atmospheric soul and fast paced funk of the title track (featuring the guitar of Brian Monroney) through the sultry flow of the closing track “Good Night,” AND NOW THIS also celebrates the decades long friendship and intuitive, forward thinking musical chemistry between Taylor and Esposito. Their dynamic history dates back to when they played in the same band as students at the University of Nevada Las Vegas – and includes Taylor touring in Esposito’s band when he was a pop star in the late 80s touring with New Kids on the Block. CountdownIn the 19 years since Paul Taylor first got On The Horn with his hit debut album, he s enjoyed an extraordinary journey in the contemporary urban jazz world.
From the start of his recording career, Taylor has created his ever cool deeply soulful and rhythmic trip-hop influenced sound by working with some of urban jazz and R&B s top producers, including Rex Rideout, Barry J. Eastmond and The Heavyweights. But one of the most important architects of the saxman s core flow has been Dino Esposito, who helped Taylor establish his vibe with On The Horn and Pleasure Seeker, and has played a powerful role in the saxophonist s evolution by helming tracks on his subsequent recordings Undercover, Hypnotic, Nightlife, Prime Time and Tenacity.

Countdown marks the return of Dino Esposito who for the second album in a row is the sole producer. “I’m always trying to grow as an artist, so there were ideas going all the time as we developed these tracks,” he adds. “I definitely have an established sound, so the key was having an open mind and being honest when we hit on a certain vibe, groove or lick I had done before and taking the tune in another direction,” says Taylor. Countdown also finds Paul working with guest artist Peter White. Taylor’s mix of funk and sensuality were a natural fit for the emerging urban jazz genre, and he soon became one of its core artists.

From the start of his recording career, Taylor has created his ever cool deeply soulful and rhythmic trip-hop influenced sound by working with some of urban jazz and R&B s top producers, including Rex Rideout, Barry J. Eastmond and The Heavyweights. But one of the most important architects of the saxmans core flow has been Dino Esposito, who helped Taylor establish his vibe with On The Horn and Pleasure Seeker 1997, and has played a powerful role in the saxophonist’s evolution by helming tracks on his subsequent recordings Undercover 2000, his Peak Records debut Hypnotic 2001, Nightlife 2005, and Prime Time 2011.

Tenacity marks the first time ever that Taylor has recorded an entire project with a single producer and his longtime friendship and incredible chemistry with Esposito made him the perfect choice for the varied rhythms and progressive sonics that the saxophonist wanted.

“I have always had this special bond with Dino and it was really exciting to focus on doing an entire project with my great friend, rather than just a few tracks here and there like in the past; says Taylor. Paul Taylor – Burnin’

The summer is not hot enough. Paul Taylor lets it burn with his new album scheduled for release July 21, 2009 on Peak Records. It’s Paul fifth release on this label and it looks like Paul keeps the standard high. After the tremendous success of his previous album Ladies Choice Paul teamed up again with the producers Barry Eastmond and Rex Rideout following the chart-topping concept.

But there is a change in the instruments. Paul plays instead of soprano and alto sax the tenor sax on nine of the ten tracks. Playing the tenor sax requires more physical strength. “The focus on the tenor happened by very happy accident,” Paul comments. “I thought it would be cool to bring my tenor along with my soprano and alto to the sessions which kicked off the project. When I got to the studio and opened up my cases, I saw that the soprano was damaged. It made sense to use both alto and tenor to start writing, and I really started liking the way the lower tones of the tenor sounded.

One of Barry’s strengths in jazz is producing the tenor, so we just kept rolling with it. It’s got a gutsier sound and as things turned out, lent itself to the retro ’70s soul sounds that naturally emerged from our writing and recording sessions. I always think back to that Junior Walker Shotgun blast and this was just my time to go in this direction.”

Back in the Day awakes memories of wonderful summer days full of emotion and joy. Grover Washington Jr. is in the air. Balladeer Billy Cliff shines with a charisma like Michael McDonald. The similarity is undeniable.
