Nils – City Groove

The fact that Nils was born in Germany, is based more on a pure coincidence. Long ago he has made his own American way of life. His music is full of inspirations for his American musical colleagues. Highlights of his solo career are the smooth jazz albums Pacific Coast Highway (2005), Ready To Play (2007) and Up Close And Personal (2009).

In September Nils will be one of the headliners of the Smooth Jazz Festival Augsburg 2012. Just in time he releases his new album City Groove on September 18, 2012. According to the liner notes of his upcoming CD he is joined by Ricky Lawson and Simon Phillips (drums), Darryl Jones, Reggie McBride and Alex Al (bass), Clydene Jackson and Mitch Forman (keys), Oliver Brown (percussion), Johnny Britt (trumpet), Dov (live strings), Eddie Brown (vocals), Jeff Golub (guitar).

The introducing title song presents trumpet player Johnny Britt, who delivers jazzy overtones to Nils’ earth bounded guitar loops. Casablanca is Morocco’s door to Europe. However don’t await Arabian sounds. This song crystallizes Nils’ typical guitar play with melodious chords on a pattern with wah-wah effects.

Nils – What The Funk?

Is it a little wonder that Nils became so popular? No, it’s his unique and signature sound and his dynamic presence producing a well-seen musician on every big festival.

Best known as a smooth jazz guitarist by his solo projects Pacific Coast Highway (2005), Ready To Play (2007) and Up Close And Personal (2009) he now gives his music a new touch for the next generation.

What The Funk? is the question and the title of his new album, which was released in 2010. Most of the tunes are written and arranged by Nils, but he invited some great cats like Oliver Brown (percussion), Alex Al (bass), Reggie McBride (bass), Ricky Lawson (drums), Clydene Jackson (keyboards) and many more to make his album vivid and attractive.

Nils gives us a first impression of the new direction with Shake It. Shake your booty, wiggle and enjoy the music. The Hump continues the catchy mood. C’est la vie!

Nils – What the Funk?

Nils fourth album on Baja/TSR, What the Funk? expands on his already successful jazz base and incorporates dance and R&B into the mix.

His impressive list of accolades includes most played song of the year at jazz radio in 2005 with Pacific Coast Highway, a nomination as best Jazz Guitarist for the American Smooth Jazz Awards in 2010, musical director for the Independent Spirit Awards Show and numerous #1 hits from his previous three albums.

What the Funk? lives up to its title with groove filled tracks and soulful riffs that Nils delivers with his renowned guitar skills. The lineup of musicians features stalwarts Rickie Lawson (drums), Alex Al (bass), Oliver Brown (percussion) and Avatar choir vocalist Clydene Jackson (background vocals/ keyboards).

Nils – Up Close And Personal

German born guitarist and composer Nils resides since the mid-80’s in southern California. After visiting the musician institute in Hollywood Nils started in the 80’s as an engineer in a recording studio. There he found the possibility to learn all technical tricks of recording, which was very helpful to record his first album Blue Planet, which was released in 1998 and received high acclaims. After composing for movie and TV Nils had the chance to work with Gabriele Anders, Rick Braun and others with the support of producer Paul Brown.

Nils avoids to listen to much too smooth jazz radio stations to keep his musical influences fresh. Nils plays Valley Arts guitars, like other Los Angeles studio musicians and jazz guitarists such as Lee Ritenour, Steve Lukather, Tommy Tedesco and Larry Carlton. On the quiet Nils is an avid lover of contemporary jazz although he realizes the needs of a secure income nowadays. But when he returned to his solo career it was as a smooth jazz guitarist with Pacific Coast Highway (2005) followed by Ready To Play (2007). After the tremendous success of both albums Nils is back with Up Close And Personal (2009).

Supporting musicians of this album are Clydene Jackson (keyboards, vocals), Oliver Brown (percussion), Ricky Lawson (drums), Reggie Mc Bride and Alex Al (basses). There are also some additional guest musicians like Shilts (sax), Larry Dunn (piano, mini moog), Eddie Brown (vocals), Dan Farrow (clavinet) and more. Nils composed all songs with the exception of Europa, which is an old Santana song from the time of Woodstock.

In this time of misery and recession there is still a remedy for relaxation and switching off, Nils’ music. Soul Mates has an immense uplifting potential. Let’s hum “We Are Soul Mates!” Up Close & Personal is Nils’ serious expression of his knowledge and impetus. Quick and precise riffs define a captivating melody. Nils reveals that professional craftsmanship and sultry melodies are no opposite.
