James Robinson – New Beginnings

“The 12th of 13 children, Silicon Valley raised virtuoso James Robinson was blessed to have the guitarisma in his DNA, with six of his eight brothers playing guitar and offering him a wide array of inspirations and access to top instructors from an early age. Legendary three-time Grammy winning hard rock/metal maestro Steve Vai once gushed of Robinson’s multi-faceted talents for Latin, World, Jazz, Flamenco, Middle Eastern, Rock, “He’s phenomenal,” and he should know. Vai signed him to his Favoured Nations Acoustic label for the release of Colours in 2005.

Over 15 years later, Robinson quite literally marks New Beginnings with his deeply intricate yet infectiously melodic, playfully grooving and accessible debut for Innervision, The generous 14 track set (which includes three unique, rhythmically shifting three-movement tracks, “Cascal,” “New Beginnings” and “Bronze”) is a flamenco fans’ romantic dreamscape, full of speedy runs, easy loping mid-tempo tender mercies, spirited strumming, snappy percussive fire and – saving perhaps the most intricate expression for last on “Sophia” – gently lilting balladry.

Vai said of New Beginnings, “He is sounding just phenomenal on this record and his chops, tone, not choice, phrasing are all quite stellar.” But don’t take Steve and Larry’s word for it – experience these transcendent New Beginnings for yourself!”

Valeriy Stepanov – New Beginnings

No matter how far away his musical kernel might be considered by the geographical standpoint. Lastly, the internet of things represents a fusion of the physical and digital, the real and virtual worlds. If an historical constant is to be defined in the relationship between Russia and the West, then it is the central role that the West, in all its many musical forms, plays in Russian view. Moscow based multi-instrumentalist Valeriy Stepanov is going West.

With New Beginnings (2017) Stepanov installs a shining beacon of smooth jazz, a statement of creative presence. Valeriy Stepanov performs on this album piano, Rhodes, Clavinet, organ, synth bass, drums, lead & background vocals, Doumbek, Pimak, claps, keyboards, programming & editing. He is joined on selected tracks by Vsevolod Guzov (cello & djembe), U-Nam (guitar), Marion Meadows (soprano sax), Albert Stepanov (bass and violin), Andrey Chmut (soprano sax, alto sax) and Borisbob Akhmetov (guitar).

What is a better starting idea than to infect people with your good mood? Valeriy takes it serious and offers with Happy People a fine bouquet of sparkling musical ideas to ease into your spring morning. This skillful effortlessness in the style of Brian Culbertson also plays a key role on Tonight featuring guitar hero U-Nam, who reinforces a groove attack that is cutting edge.

Valeriy Stepanov – New Beginnings

Less ‘From Russia With Love’ And More ‘From Russia With Groove’ multi instrumentalist Valeriy Stepanov is all set to take the smooth jazz world by storm with his Skytown Records debut release, New Beginnings.  Stepanov has been identified as having the ability to traverse the entire spectrum of jazz, from his smooth jazz sensibilities, that are very much the province of New Beginnings, through to his own brand of fusion that can accurately be described ss Chick Corea meets Jeff Lorber.

Above all, what makes Valeriy stand out from the crowd is the formula he has for rhythm and melody, his unbounded energy and the sublime technique that he first learned from his father then built on by studying music theory at the prestigious central music school of Moscow State Conservatory. Not only that, with six years of recording and performing with his band vsak, Valeriy has polished these skills yet further so that now, at age 27, he is perfectly positioned to join the ever increasing band of eastern European artists to have found musical fame in the west.

The story of Valeriy Stepanov is very much a story of today, a story where the internet combined with an abundance of talent can propel a performer from the most unlikely of locations into the global spotlight. Pre-order the album at
