Beatifik – The Long Drive Home

Drummer and composer Roger Odell is founder and longtime member of the famous British group Shakatak. Like the other musicians of the group Roger has established his own solo projects. Roger calls it Beatifik.

In late 1999/2000 Roger recorded the first album entitled Blue Window. One can call it a family project, because his son Jamie played on keys, his wife Larraine and Jacqui Hicks were the featured vocalists, his daughter Maxine sang background. On the second album Intrigue (2015) performed beside Roger, Larraine, Jacqui, Jamie and in addition Mornington Lockett on saxes and Keith Winter on guitar.

Now Roger returns with the third solo project The Long Drive Home (2019). The cast is the same as on the second album. Bass guitarist Simon Goulding from the Snake Davis Band joins the formation. Guest appearances by vocalist Liane Carroll, trumpet and flugelhorn player Paul Higgs and percussionist Snowboy round off the whole thing.

Beatifik – The Long Drive Home

Roger Odell is the drummer and a founder member of Shakatak for whom he wrote lyrics for the band’s Top 50 recordings and Jamie (AKA Jimpster) is a DJ/Producer and joint owner of Freerange Records. The album consists of 11 original compositions and one standard. The main vocalist is Jacqui Hicks who is a regular backing singer with Shakatak, the lead vocalist with the Back To Basie Orchestra and featured artist with her own bands and many others whilst Larraine Odell is the featured singer on 2 songs.

Saxophonist Mornington Lockett is recognised as one of the leading UK jazz musicians and plays tenor and soprano saxophones on a number of tracks. Guitarist Keith Winter is a former Shakatak member who left the band due to illness and who made a miraculous recovery as demonstrated here. Joining for the first time is the bass guitarist Simon Goulding from the Snake Davis Band. Beatifik is completed by Jamie on keyboards and Roger on drums and programming. For this new album there are guest appearances by Liane Carroll who is featured on the title track, Paul Higgs on trumpet and flugelhorn and the percussionist Snowboy.

Beatifik – Intrigue

Roger Odell, drummer/composer is known as a member and co-founder of the famous UK-based group Shakatak. With more than 50 albums the band is one of the most productive world wide. Beside this all band members have already released own solo projects. In case of Roger Odell it’s the formation Beatifik.

In late 1999/2000 Roger recorded the first album entitled Blue Window. One can call it a family project, because his son Jamie played on keys, his wife Larraine and Jacqui Hicks were the featured vocalists, his daughter Maxine sang background. Now Roger is back with the sophomore album Intrigue (2015).

The new album features Larraine and Jacqui again. Roger plays the drums and composed most of the songs, while Jamie plays all keyboards, recorded and engineered the project. In addition perform Mornington Lockett on saxes and Keith Winter on guitar. Keith was an ex-member of Shakatak, before he had to leave the group because of a nerve disease of his fingers. After his miraculous recovery he has returned to former strength.

Beatifik – Intrigue

IntrigueRoger Odell‘s Beatifik group have recorded a new CD entitled Intrigue, produced by the father and son team of Roger and Jamie Odell. Roger is the drummer and one of the founder members of Shakatak, for whom he wrote the lyrics to all of the band’s Top 50 recordings. Jamie (AKA Jimpster) is a producer/DJ and part-owner of Freerange Records. He was an original member of the improvising group The Bays and has recently worked with producer Trevor Horn on Seal’s new album.

The tracks have both music and lyrics composed by Roger apart from two collaborations with Jamie, one with Shakatak keyboard maestro Bill Sharpe and Roger’s special re-arrangement of a Cole Porter classic which features jazz singer Larraine Odell – wife to Roger, mother to Jamie! She also adds her unique velvet sound to two other tracks. The album additionally celebrates the return to performing of guitarist Keith Winter, who had to leave Shakatak in the early 90’s due to a mysterious illness which affected his central nervous system. After completely losing the ability to play the guitar for almost 20 years, he has made a miraculous recovery over the last 3 years which has totally confounded his doctors and given hope to those similarly affected. On the evidence of this recording Keith is now playing as well as ever.

The main vocalist on this recording is Jacqui Hicks who is the regular backing singer with Shakatak, the lead vocalist with the UK’s Back To Basie Orchestra and a featured artist with many other groups. Jacqui also performs with her own group and she has recorded two CDs under her own name. Mornington Lockett is one of the very best UK jazz musicians and is featured on a number of tracks on both tenor and soprano saxophones. He won a British Jazz Award for his band The New Couriers, which evolved from the famous Ronnie Scott/Tubby Hayes group, The Jazz Couriers. Roger’s vast experience of performing in jazz, fusion, Latin and funk is combined with Jamie’s knowledge of all the latest modern recording techniques and great talent as a pianist/composer/producer on the cutting edge of popular music.
