Al Turner – This Is

“The Burner” Al Turner, bass player exceptional, has released after It’s Good To Have Friends (2005), Movin’ (2009), Sunny Days (2011) and Simply Amazing (2015) this year his fifth album This Is. The cover is taken from a photo captured on a concert in Wilmington.

The album goes into position with the affirmative This Is. In a fast race of instruments the dynamic melody crystallizes. The bass also gives the fast beat of the following piece Sunrise. There is an infectious almost captivating funky spirit that inspires the instruments involved.

Al Turner – This Is

Al Turner “The Burner” releases his 5th solo recording This Is. Produced by Al Turner, This Is features upbeat, joyful and melodic tunes with guest appearances by Marlon McClain, Tom Braxton and Ron Otis to name a few. As with each of Al’s recordings, the groove is the central theme throughout This Is. Al reflects on some of the influences that help shape this exciting recording. “Earl Klugh, Bob James and James Jamerson are three of my musical heroes. I have learned so much about melody, production and the groove from these legendary musicians”. As a tribute to Mr. Klugh, Al does his rendition of the classic “Living Inside Your Love”, which features the beautiful vocal stylings of L’Renee.

Bass guitar player Al Turner, called “The Burner”, started his solo career in 2005 with the debut album It’s Good To Have Friends. Soon followed his next albums Movin’ (2009), Sunny Days (2011) and last year Simply Amazing.

The album starts with the forceful Upright on which Al plays the bass with various finger styles from Slap like Victor Wooten to the soft attack as an upright bass player like Brian Bromberg. The tune is wonderfully embedded in a fine drum/percussion arrangement by Dana Davis on drums and Gino Castillo on percussion. Beside the bass the tune also offers a special keyboard solo.
