Citrus Sun – Expanses and Vision

Incognito founder Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick realized his musical ideas always with various formations. Citrus Sun is one of these groups. Member of this project are Bluey (guitar and vocals), Jim Mullen (guitar), together with Incognito members Matt Cooper (keyboards), Francis Hylton (bass), Francesco Mendolia (drums, percussion)), Francisco Salas (guitar), and Dominic Glover (trumpet). Furthermore singer Imaani and Natalie Williams were joining the band. After Another Time Another Space (2000) and People of Tomorrow (2014) is Ride Like The Wind (2018) their third joint project.

Now they return with Expanses and Vision (2020), their fourth project. Like its predecessor Ride Like The Wind, the album has been recorded in Thailand and London. The 11 tracks are primarily instrumental, but there are some stunning vocal tracks, which feature Valerie Etienne, Noel McKoy and Bluey aka Jean-Paul Maunick of Incognito himself. Legendary UK guitarist Jim Mullen returns on a blistering version of Lonnie Liston Smith’s classic “Expansions” (with vocals by Jamiroquai’s Valerie Etienne) and “Stay You”, a Seventies- styled tribute to the late Leon Ware. Featured along with Jim – and trumpet player Dominic Glover – on “Hard Boiled”, a funky instrumental which comes to the boil nicely at around 5 minutes, is the youngest addition to the band, 22-year-old Indonesian harmonica sensation Rega Dauna.

Noel McKoy is the guest vocalist on a gritty reworking of the Ashford-Simpson favorite “California Soul”, with background vocals from Valerie Etienne and Hazel Fernandes. And Bluey himself contributes vocals on several cuts, including the album closer “Thinking Of You”, a gorgeous soulful bossa duet with Deborah Bond.
