Dan Vogel – Transitions

Dan Vogel grew up in the mid-western United States, the son of a pastor and youngest of four siblings. Eventually leaving to pursue performing full time, he paid his dues on the club circuit before joining the Air Force Band in San Antonio, Texas. While there, he performed with jazz, country, rock and big band ensembles as well as copious off-duty “pay-gigs” in nearby Austin. Upon completing his enlistment, he moved to Austin and was soon in high demand, performing with Tommy Shane Steiner, Tammy Graham, Rayvon, and Major Lee Burkes as well as with his own projects. He resumed session work as well, with artists such as Andre’ Venson, Dr. James Polk, Dizzy Lizard, and many others.

In 2001, Dan once again put his engineering and production experience to work as he, along with keyboardist Howard LeNoble and bassist Alvin Dawkins, formed Jacob’s Ladder and released their CD “You’re The One” to regional acclaim. Dan has become increasingly sought after as an engineer and producer as well as a guitarist. Since 2001 he has produced, engineered, and played on numerous recordings for a wide range of artists as well as commercial and jingle work for corporate clients such as Dell Computers, Main Street Homes, and the Texas Department of Health. In addition, he has taught guitar and music theory, done clinics for church music teams, worked with various music programs for inner-city youth, and released an independent CD of original instrumental jazz compositions entitled September Serenade.

His newest album is entitled Transitions presenting original instrumental acoustic music with elements of finger-style, Latin jazz, and even funk. Now available at CDBaby.

David Becker Tribune – Batavia

Most artists put a lot of themselves into their work. Batavia (Acoustic Music Records, 2010), by the David Becker Tribune, is more deeply personal for the leader. The 13-song album chronicles the experiences of his mother’s family, Dutch nationals who endured captivity in Indonesia and Holland during World War II.

For most of the recording, Becker is accompanied by brother Bruce Becker on drums, and Bolle Diekmann on bass. An assortment of guests appears on selected tracks.

The title song’s haunting mood captivates from the opening phrases. Becker plays electric and acoustic guitars. Russell Ferrante of the Yellowjackets is on acoustic piano, and Aniela Perry sits in on cello. Bass and drums are effective with their subtle, yet engaging, touches. Inspired by the Dutch name given to the capital of Indonesia, “Batavia” was the first port of entry for his grandparents when they visited the nation. Becker’s lead is terrific, but the ensemble as a whole gives this an almost orchestral feel.

Cal Harris Jr. – Inside Out

More than a decade in the making, Contemporary Jazz composer Cal Harris Jr. is finally set to paint the world in vibrant colors with the release of his debut album Inside Out. Inside Out illustrates the story of Harris’s own unique background with an eclectic marriage of R&B, jazz, funk, soul, blues, and world music. His story, his gift, and his brand are poised to take the world by surprise with an extraordinary approach to Contemporary Jazz.

Cal Harris Jr.’s upbringing in Los Angeles was not a typical one. His earliest exposure to music took place literally in the company of legends. As the son of Grammy-nominated sound engineer Calvin Harris, Cal Harris Jr. grew up wandering the halls of the renowned Motown Studios in Los Angeles. In fact, one of his fondest childhood memories was a trip to the candy store with Melvin Franklin of the Temptations—a treat he would appreciate even more as an adult. It was within this environment that Harris. would develop a love affair with music…and a well-groomed talent.

“I fell in love with arranging music after attending a Commodores session with my dad. It was a great track and I fell asleep as they began working on the orchestration. I woke up a few hours later in a wonder land of music. Soaring strings and horns, and sizzling cymbal swells. It was amazing to hear the transformation, an experience I’ll never forget.”
